HOW TO MAKE A LOW CARB BREAKFAST SMOOTHIE

This works for all smoothies, not only breakfast smoothies. Honestly, you might be mad at me for how easy it is to make!

Instructions:

  1. Toss your ingredients in a blender
  2. Blend
  3. Pour
  4. Drink ( or eat??)!

Tips for making a great low carb smoothie

– Add the milk first! I have destroyed one too many blenders by adding solid ingredients first.

Ingredients  for Low Carb Smoothies

FRUIT

Do not overdo fruit. It’s easy to do, as the fruit will taste sweeter the longer you are on the keto diet. Some fruits have such a high sugar content, that they are off limits. Fruit that is good for low carb diets are

  1. Strawberries
  2. Blackberries
  3. Raspberries
  4. Cantaloupe

GREENS

Spinach, kale, arugula, parsley, romaine, celery, and broccoli are all ingredients you can use in a low carb high-fat smoothie.  You will be getting tons of good nutrients from the vegetables while keeping your carbs low.

Protein for Keto Smoothies

Do not overdo the protein. Extra protein can be converted into sugar and raise insulin. Your raised insulin can then store fat.

Add some whey protein, or vanilla protein to add a nice texture. I personally don’t like added protein, unless absolutely necessary ( like in a delicious protein pancake)

A good alternative to whey protein would be to add a raw egg! The other ingredients in the low carb smoothie would hide the flavor, and you would be getting a highly nutritious smoothie.

Also using whole fat Greek yogurt is a great protein source, without too many carbs.

Superfoods

It seems every food is a superfood now these days. In reality, we are discovering that whole natural foods are the key to health. We will probably never see a man made processed food as a superfood.

Some of these “superfoods” that are wonderful in low carb smoothies are ….

  • Chia Seeds
  • Flax Seeds( make sure they are ground)
  • Cacoa Nibs
  • Spirulina
  • Hemp Seeds
  • Hemp Hearts (these are zero net carbs, and 15g of fat!)
  • Matcha
  • Acai
  • Goji Berries ( use sparingly)

Best Fats to Use in Low Carb Smoothies

  • Coconut Oil
  • Nut Butters
  • Avocados
  • Olive Oil
  • Butter
  • MCT OIl

Coconut oil and butter will clump together. Using MCT is a great alternative to help you get into ketosis and turn into a fat burning machine!

Flavorings

You can literally make a pie without apples that taste like  an apple pie.

How? Because of seasonings and spices. They will make or break your smoothie. You can make a dessert smoothie without the high carb ingredients. You do this by a careful selection of spices.

  • Spices
  • Cinnamon
  • Apple Pie
  • Pumpkin Pie
  • Cloves
  • Extracts
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Raspberry Extract
  • Almond Extract
  • Strawberry Extract

Sugar-Free Flavorings- Use these sparingly as they are usually loaded with Splenda and aspartame. You can find some sweetened with Splenda. Do not go overboard!

Liquids

No smoothie would be very good without a liquid. Some great liquids to use would be

  • Almond Milk
  • Cashew Milk
  • Coconut Milk
  • Cream ( High Carbs)
  • Ice
  • Water

Sweetener

You want to use sweeteners sparingly on a low carb diet. When using fruit in the keto smoothie, I would avoid sweetener altogether. You can get addicted to artificial sweetener just as you can regular sugar. If you do decide to use artificial sweeteners you can try

  • Stevia
  • Erythritol
  • Monk Fruit
  • Xylitol
  • Swerve
  • Liquid Stevia ( the best option)

Tools you will need

  • Blender
